Back in the Game: John Tucker and the Return of Teen Rom-Com Royalty

The cult favorite high school romantic comedy "John Tucker Must Die" is slated for a sequel, with Arielle Kebbel, one of the stars from the original film, announcing her return in the role of Carrie and her new role as a producer.

This film, which wove a tale of Shakespearean revenge, follows a plot where a group of ex-girlfriends of the school's popular jock, John Tucker (played by Jesse Metcalfe), scheme to get back at him for his philandering ways, with Brittany Snow joining their ranks. The 2006 hit also featured Sophia Bush, Penn Badgley, Ashanti, and was directed by Betty Thomas.

The upcoming sequel might even explore a redemption narrative for John Tucker.

Metcalfe, during a panel at Epic Cons Chicago, revealed, "There's a script out there, and I've heard it's outstanding."

Although he hadn't read the script yet, Metcalfe expressed his eagerness to be involved and is excited about the potential developments for his character. He humorously added anticipation for showcasing his "dad bod" on screen, hinting at a possible return to some of the original film's memorable moments. Kebbel confirmed that the screenplay includes roles for the original cast members and hinted at the possibility of John Tucker getting an opportunity for transformation in the sequel.

This announcement comes amid a resurgence of early 2000s teen rom-coms, with reboots and sequels like the musical film adaptation of "Mean Girls" and a follow-up to "Freaky Friday" featuring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in discussions. Additionally, a third "Princess Diaries" film is in the works, penned by Aadrita Mukerji, though it remains to be seen if Anne Hathaway will return as Genovia's princess, marking a continuation of the original series two decades after the last installment.
